Experiencia negativa: I spoke with the branch manager about becoming a new member at the gym. I asked an open question: “What are all the charges I should expect over the next six months by joining your gym?” She mentioned only some of the fees, but omitted others. It was only after the fifth time I asked—when I insisted on confirming that there were no additional charges—that she "remembered" to mention two more fees. I did not appreciate that she deliberately withheld this information in an attempt to convince me to sign up. Instead of addressing the issue, she became upset, blamed me, and eventually hung up the phone because she did not know how to handle the situation. She will likely respond now and try to shift the blame to others, but the reality is that she knowingly withheld important information from me.

Experiencia fantástica: First time working out here and got an amazing workout . It was quiet and well kept. They have a great selection of machines and some i haven't seen at other locations. I'm certainly coming back.

Experiencia fantástica: Go try The Wellness Center located in the back! Literally my favorite in the area. The staff is super friendly and never rushes you—they actually take the time to answer questions and explain different products. Everything is clean, organized, and the vibe is always welcoming. They’ve got a great selection with fair prices, and I always leave feeling like I got exactly what I needed. You can tell they really care about their customers here. Also, ask for the sign up sheet and punch card to receive deals and news of upcoming events and sales.

Experiencia fantástica: Great gym! Would love to see a pendulum squat, they are highly requested throughout the gym community, due to the deep stretch and natural hip stance it provides. Please I am begging you.

With a strong focus on customer education and product transparency, this center successfully bridges the gap between holistic healing and cannabinoid science. Definitely a must try. It’s clean, safe, and totally family-friendly. I even work out with my baby strapped to me and always feel completely comfortable! One of the absolute highlights of this gym is the Wellness Center. It’s not just a gym—it’s a full wellness hub! The Wellness Center is beautifully stocked with CBD products, Delta 9, vitamins, and other post-workout essentials. Whether you’re looking to recover, relax, or recharge, they’ve got exactly what you need. It’s the perfect complement to any fitness routine. The fitness staff is amazing, and I have to give a special shoutout to Niyah and Bella at the smoothie bar—OMG, they make the best protein shakes! On top of that, the gym also offers awesome amenities like tanning and a peaceful Zen Den for some much-needed relaxation. If you’re in or around Matawan, NJ, Retro Fitness is more than just a place to work out—it’s your go-to spot for fitness, health, and recovery all in one place!

Experiencia negativa: I came in to cancel my account and was told I could freeze it (as well as the charges) until I scanned my ID back in. I opted to freeze it and though I never came back was charged every month since. Since it was a freeze and not a cancellation, I can’t get my money back. I haven’t been able to reach this gym vi phone, so I will have to come to cancel AGAIN in person. Bad customer service.

Experiencia negativa: Everything is broken . People are RUDE and LOW RENT . They have no gym etiquette at all. Not for experienced gym goers. A ton of better gyms in the area so don’t waste your time !

Experiencia fantástica: I love my Retro in Matawan because it is clean and well maintained. I enjoy the stress-free environment. I prefer free weights to the other Chain Gyms that force you to use machines. It was a small gesture, but when I went away on vacation, and had not been to the gym in a few days, and Retro sent a text saying that they missed me, with a free smoothie offer. It may seem like a small gesture, but they have my loyalty now. Keep it up Retro!

Experiencia negativa: I'm a bit frustrated with this location. The opener is never on time and multiple complaints have been made and no resolution so far from the owner. Door are to open at 5 a.m but the employee doesn't show up until 6 a.m. or after.

Experiencia positiva: It has enough for what I need and is not too crowded then I use it but the locker room and "zen den" stink like weed. Today the gym was closed with no notice posted outside of the gym or on their social media.

Experiencia positiva: It’s a clean and pleasant place to workout. I can do without the loud rap playing during the day, and save it when the kids come later in the afternoon.

Experiencia positiva: Overall, it’s a great facility. The equipment is clean and well-maintained. The only downside is that this location is smaller than some of the other Retro Fitness facilities I’ve been to. Due to its size, it tends to get crowded, especially at the free weight section during peak evening hours.

Experiencia fantástica: Absolutely love seeing the evolution this location has gone through! Before the new management you should have seen how this place was maintained, (whether it was the atmosphere, cleanliness, or overall look of the gym) and to see it now is outstanding. This gym is ALWAYS clean (ive never felt more comfortable to take a shower at a gym like i am here at retro fitness matawan) with the help of the cleaning lady, whose there everytime I go and to be quite honest she's like an auntie to most members. Bela and the rest of the front desk staff is also so welcoming and detail oriented that they remember each members protein shake order or pre workout preference. My consistency in the gym has alot to do with the atmosphere here, and every month theres something new done whether its equipment, layout, gratitude board, event, new workout class, tanning machine, and the list goes on. Essentially the evolution of this gym corresponds or should i say parallels with the evolution of its members! (ALSO THERE OPEN ON HOLIDAYS)!

Experiencia positiva: I recently joined Retro and have been thoroughly impressed with my experience so far. The facility is top-notch, with modern equipment and a clean, spacious layout. The staff are incredibly friendly and always willing to help, whether it's with workout tips or just a friendly chat. The only problem I have is the time it closes on the weekend. See, having a job like me when I get off later in the day the gym is only open for a select amount of time in which I cannot fit in a whole workout. Maybe in the near future retro will reconsider their open time frame. Overall great spot with great people.

Experiencia fantástica: For anybody that does not know this yet, Retro Fitness in Matawan is under new ownership and wow... The gym speaks for itself. For anybody that has previously worked out in the Matawan location in the past 6-7 years and has not been back- GO GET A FREE DAY. I used to work out there years ago and left because of the shape it was in. And now going back to see the changes, the cleanliness, but more than anything else the atmosphere- everyone is like a family. Very welcoming atmosphere. Thank you to new ownership who came in and really cleaned this place up this year.

Experiencia positiva: Great medium sized gym. More equipment than you need. The new owners are great! Added some new pieces. My only gripe, lately, the entire gym reeks of weed. Kinda of off-putting.

Experiencia fantástica: Vinny and his staff makes everyone feel welcome to the gym. The gym is well maintained and the bathrooms are kept clean as well. The gym is comfortable to work out in and this adds to the pleasure of coming to work out at this location for everyone who visits. This gym is family friendly and all are welcome here. No gym attitude here.

Experiencia negativa: Update: Bella is the only saving grace about this place, providing me with a refund for the last two months, and contacting ABC on my behalf. Thank you very much for resolving this and for having excellent customer service. Go anywhere else but this place for your workouts—the machines are disgustingly run down anyway. The employees here waited three full days to process my cancellation request, leading to me being outside the 10 day window. Therefore, I got charged for being a member for another month. Doubt that was an accident. I called on Saturday, 9/23 and spoke with a guy that explained payments go through ABC financial and to call them when they open Monday. Ok fair. But I COULD NOT get in touch with a human there to help me. I still can’t. Called the gym and spoke to Vinny (the owner apparently) on Monday, 9/25, who promised he would save my phone number and follow up with me about it this week. Nothing. Called back Wednesday, 9/27, talked to Vinny again. He got off the phone with me promising to call ABC and get back to me. I didn’t get a call back. I called AGAIN 3 hours later and a woman said he stepped out and she would tell him to get in touch with me upon his return. Well it’s tomorrow and I’m still waiting. I’ve wasted so much time trying to remedy a problem that they ADMITTED they are at fault for because my cancellation letter was clearly marked for 3 days prior. They should be bending over backwards to help me, but I guess since they’re not getting my business anymore they couldn’t care less. I just moved and every single dollar is precious to me right now. I just want my refund and to put this awful club behind me for good. If you guys want to fix it, you have my number.

Experiencia negativa: Place opens after designated open time. Frustrating for those with busy schedules. People waiting outside. For early workouts, go elsewhere. Also need to fix ventilation. Stale dirty Sox air all the time.

Experiencia fantástica: Even though it is small the staff is knowledgeable and keep the place extremely clean..they have a decent amount of cardio equipment and could use a few more machines for weight training, but overall a good place to get in shape.

Experiencia fantástica: They are improving daily compared to the last owner who left this place in disparate need of attention it was extremely dirty now they have a great cleaning lady and equipment is finally being fixed you can only do so much so quick with the way it was left before trading hands keep it up

Experiencia negativa: People at desk typically are wearing airpods and are inattentive. Most workers are on their phone and won’t help or have the answers to any of your questions. Gym is very dirty and no one does much about it. Wouldn’t recommend, I suggest the one in Lincroft.

Experiencia positiva: The people are great and they keep it clean. Overall a great place since new management came in. One very recent complaint is the music. Repetitive and can get irritating.

Experiencia negativa: I have had memberships to 5 different gyms over 16 years of lifting and personal training, and I’ve never seen a gym in worse disrepair than this one. The plates are literally chipping apart, the grips on machines have worn so badly that the glue stained my clothing. They refuse to turn the air conditioning on when it is hot outside. It seems to me like the owners are cheap and just don’t want to bother fixing anything or making it worthwhile to work out there.

Experiencia negativa: This gym has gotten too warm to workout in. Indoor room temperature is set at 73. From a cardio standpoint it is too high resulting in uncomfortable conditions. Restricting the benefits of cooler air and ventilation has greatly impaired my workout. Though rare — it is not uncommon for people to suffer heat-related illnesses, dizziness, or even cardiac arrest when body temperature gets too high. Several staff members acknowledge this is problem to no avail. Unfortunately I will be canceling my membership at this gym.

Experiencia positiva: It’s a good gym. Small but ok. Not your bodybuilders gym but it works. I do wish there was more room to move around as some of the equipment is too close to the next and you find yourself standing too close to the next person. Other than that, it’s not a bad gym. Just wish it was a bit bigger.

The managers and owners know how to give constructive criticism in a way that uplifts their employees, and If I ever need time off, my managers and the owner are so willing to jump to help me--not only with covering shifts, but if I need any assistance in my personal life, they are there. I genuinely enjoy coming to work and don't mind being here at all. They motivate me and make me WANT to be a great employee. Thanks, Retro!

I genuinely enjoyed that they have a protein shake bar with an assortment of preworkouts and other selections of drinks. Front desk girls are very down to earth and helped assist me during my workout. They have AMAZING air conditioning. The gym is under new ownership and has made great changes since he took over. HIGHLY recommend.

I like that they added more squat racks. I like that they have accessories to add to your workouts as well. If your looking for a gym to join I recommend this one

Experiencia fantástica: Love this place! Anthony’s boot camp class is fantastic. This is the only retro I’ve been to where my class was FREE with my basic membership! It’s not too busy and Melanie is great with my son in the daycare and keeps him entertained while I get my workout in.

Over the last year I really wanted to start getting into fitness and was uneasy about going to a gym, but the staffs head manager Tianna made me feel relaxed and comfortable about the whole experience. She explained the contract in debt and even gave me a tour of the facility. The owner Varun is very hands on and whenever I am there he is always walking around the gym checking on members and the quality of the facility. I LOVE that! It shows he clearly cares about his members and staff! The team has been beyond kind to me and truly makes me feel comfortable and motivated. RETRO IN MATAWAN IS THE BEST GYM AROUND!!!

Experiencia fantástica: Been coming here since it first opened. Its affordable and clean and never busy. It has improved a lot in the past 2 years, machines are always free and open. They brought in wipes, Have never had an issue finding a machine. It has been really clean, new lights so the place is lit up very nicely I can presently say. Never really that busy, I come in the morning haven't had an issue. Honestly very happy and will always be a member.

Experiencia fantástica: I needed a gym in the area to help me with my wight loss, I been training with Anthony for a while. I needed to lose weight for my best friends wedding. I started with a free fitness assessment after the personal training manager spoke to me, and understood my goals he placed me with Anthony. I said great and signed up for 3 months and thought that would work for my goals. All things start with simple intentions, I only signed up for 3 months but after I started seeing my results I couldn't stop coming. Before my second month was done I extended for a full year. I may keep going longer. My sessions were not expensive and I got one on one attention and felt like my goals were attainable. Anytime I wanted to quit Anthony would not allow me to. For those reasons I can not recommend there training enough. The first assessment to see where you are with your goals are free so what did I have to lose besides weight, but now I have gained muscle and self confidence.

Experiencia fantástica: I love this place. It's really clean. It has all the machines I would ever need. So worth the price I pay monthly. I love the protein shakes especially with chocolate and peanut butter. Delicious!! I recommend their shakes all day. My friend and I go there sometimes just to get a shake and leave because they are just that good. I've tried a class there before and it was really fun, I think I'm going to go to some more, since it's included in my membership. Might as well take advantage of the fact that it's free classes included!!!
